Rosso di Montalcino Casisano 2023
The Rosso di Montalcino by Casisano is a wine made from Sangiovese, with great freshness and harmony. The winery works with attention to using sustainable practices in the vineyard and in the cellar, to keep these volcanic soils in full health. On the nose, there are hints of red and black fruits, delicate floral notes and slight spicy hints on the finish. On the palate, it is truly fresh, tannic and with good persistence, a wine perfect for picci with sausage ragù
Podere Casisano interprets Rosso di Montalcino with a focus on pleasantness and uniqueness: without trying to emulate the great and renowned wineries of the area and without belittling Rosso as a "small Brunello", it instead works to seek the most authentic expression of the originating vineyards, creating an immediate wine with great drinking pleasure. The context is that of a delightful everyday wine, where Sangiovese preserves all the fruit's fragrance, along with its characteristic structure.
The Sangiovese Grosso that Casisano vinifies in purity to create Rosso di Montalcino comes from the vineyard called Podere Casisano, an area of 7 hectares reclaimed since 2015 and set in a magical landscape of oak woods, not far from the slopes of Mount Amiata. The young vines rise to an altitude of 480 meters above sea level with a southeast exposure, within the southeastern quadrant of the denomination of Montalcino, and enjoy a dry climate constantly ventilated by the Tyrrhenian breezes. Typical composition for the reference soils: that mosaic of galestro, sandstone and clay, volcanic tuff, which well represents the situation of the Chinese area. The manual harvest brings perfectly ripe grapes to the winery: gently pressed, they remain in maceration on the skins for 12 days and ferment in stainless steel tanks. The aging lasts for 8 months in large Slavonian barrels, followed by a further period of 6 months in bottle.
The Rosso di Montalcino from Casisano is an intense ruby red, with a bright and transparent appearance. The bouquet expresses itself with beautiful complexity, inaugurated by notes of violet and then characterized by a fruitiness of plum and small red berries, hints of licorice, within a frame of spicy pungency. On the palate, it is dry, with a flavor that returns to the fragrant fruit and a sip rightly balanced between the vigor of the tannins and the tonic freshness. The persistent finish favors pairing with cured meats and cheeses, as well as with dishes based on meat sauces.
