The term "Cru" refers to the origin area of the grapes used to produce a certain wine; the regions that use Cru-based evaluation criteria in their production regulations are Alsace, Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Champagne. Cru wines are evaluated based on the quality of the terroir, which encompasses specific conditions related to the production area, vineyard, and microclimate: the finest Cru wines, distinguished from others, are called Grand Cru. In the Champagne region, there are 17 Grand Cru areas spread over 4000 hectares.
